I often find intriguing pieces evolve when I mix things up a bit. This custom-designed set of a necklace and earrings combines earth and water elements for an enchanting, delightful creation.

Green “grossular” garnets make up this rich, varigated strand accented with dense, dark, walnut and golden freshwater pearls. Although we associate garnets with January and the color red, these pieces illustrate that many choices exist for garnet lovers and novices alike!

I nabbed the walnut from my husband’s wood shop. I enjoy working sustainably with what is available whenever I get the chance. These pieces were trimmings from much larger woodworking projects my hubby had completed, and I love how they have been given a completely new purpose! The richness of the walnut adds depth and warmth, while the golden pearls bring the lovely, lustrous glow. Who wouldn't love elements of warmth, glow and green (especially in the middle of winter, when our surroundings can be a little less than inspiring at times)    .

Green (grossular) garnet is the most varicolored variety of the gem and is found in most every color except blue. Can you believe that? Russia, Tanzania and Kenya are major suppliers of various green garnets. Here's the skinny on a few types of green garnets:

  • You may have heard of Tsavorite. It is a very prized, sought-after brilliant green color. It was first found in Tanzania, however Kenya is famous for its prized Tsavorite mines as well.
  • Russia is the original source of the very rare, deep green Demantoid garnet.

The other mediums in this jewelry collection also come in a multitude of varieties. Walnut is a beautiful hardwood that furniture makers have prized through the ages for its stunning patterns and density. The American Black Walnut, featured here, grows in the United States in many zones...even good ol' tenacious Central Texas! Freshwater pearls, like the ones featured here, are commercially cultivated in China but are also produced in much more limited supply in Japan and the United States.
