“Spring is Nature’s Way of Saying Let's Party”  - Robin Williams    

Though the official date for spring is a few weeks away on the calendar yet, Central Texas is already bursting with a palette of colorful blooms. A Texas girl born and raised, I am partial to the rich, purple blossoms of the native Texas Mountain Laurel. Mountain Laurel is evergreen throughout the seasons but brings an explosion of color and scent from late February through March. One of the first plants to signal that winter is moving on, it paints the rolling Texas Hill Country with hues of purple in contrast with deep emerald leaves.    

Thankfully, Texas Mountain Laurel isn’t just reserved for the hill country! This native tree thrives in yards and gardens with well-drained soil and full sun. The rich, sweet fragrance of its blooms waft along gentle spring breezes, making work in the garden a pleasure! It’s been said, “If Heaven has a smell, it must be Texas Mountain Laurel.” If only these beautiful flowers could last year-round…
